Matthijs Vogels was frustrated by the amount of food people throw away after meals. So, for part of his masters thesis at the Design Academy Eindhoven in the Netherlands, the 27-year-old designer put his frustrations to work: he created a series of bowls and plates called Waste-Ware that were hand-pressed out of left-over coffee grounds and herbs. Each biodegradable set doubles as a container; the coffee version is perfect for storing chocolates. Available at Studio hergebruik.Thursday, July 31, 2008

Carolina Vallejo
Rings designed by danish jewellery designer Carolina Vallejo. She works with any material available and often seeks inspiration in existential topics and philosophical questions, which she investigates through the shape and materials of a proposed item of jewellery. Hence her pieces are often linked to themes with a historical, social or symbolic point of departure. Via www.danishcrafts.org.

Tik Tak
This clock I found at www.justanotherproduct.com from designer Paul Andrew Taylor. Clock Grampa came about through Taylor’s love of old grandfather clocks. He loved these classic pieces but felt with today’s modern homes and limited hall space they needed to be redesigned. The end piece is a stunning and elegant streamlined version of a classic which, whilst being modern but retaining old features, Taylor hopes will become a 21st century classic in its own right.
